Staying safe in extreme heat
With temperatures climbing into the 80s and 90s during the summer, it is important to recognize the signs of heat-related illness. The Montgomery County Government shares guidance to help residents identify symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke – two serious conditions that can develop during periods of extreme heat. Understanding these symptoms and knowing when to seek medical attention can help keep you and your family safe throughout the summer.

Heat Exhaustion
If you have any of these symptoms, get to an air-conditioned or shady area, drink water, and use a cooling towel.
- Faint or dizzy
- Excessive sweating
- Cool, pale, or clammy skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid, weak pulse
- Muscle cramps
Heat Stroke
If you have any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately and soak in cool water until emergency services arrive.
- Headache
- Confusion or slurred speech
- Hot, dry, or damp skin
- Body temperature above 103 degrees Fahrenheit
- Rapid, strong pulse
- Unconsciousness
