Through their eyes: the heart of being a Village News carrier

Every paper, every carrier, every route brings this community together. A seemingly classic first job, it does more than teach responsibility and independence, it becomes a way to connect the community.

Four times each year, our Village News carriers step onto their routes with purpose, pride, and the anticipation of earning their next paycheck. They brave the streets and the weather, carrying a sense of responsibility that grows with each delivery.

PRIDE IN WORK

For many carriers, it’s the thought of earning their own paycheck that excites them. “I think I most value the early working experience, because growing up, it's hard to find a job that earns you money, and I hate having to ask my parents,” Emma responded when asked what she values most about the job. For her, this opportunity brings her a sense of independence, because “earning my first paycheck, and separating it into Save and Spend jars made me feel like a grown up.”

For many carriers, who start as young as age 10, this is where they earn their very first paycheck. The idea of making money with their own hands fills them with excitement, pride, and joy. Seeing a paycheck with their names written on it is a moment they never forget.

FAMILY MOMENTS

In addition to working for a paycheck, it’s also an opportunity to spend time with family. Emily, who delivered her first paper in May, stated, “We all did the deliveries together, as a family. It was a teamwork event that we were able to knock out in about 90 minutes. We enjoyed working together.” Her mother added, “Emily loves having a job and her own income at age 11… and has already decided where to spend it...Chipotle!” Not only does she get to experience the thrill of earning and spending her first paycheck, but doing it alongside family made it even more worthwhile.

Many parents, especially of younger carriers, walk the routes with their child, turning the job into a family outing – one that brings fun and connection to this seemingly simple role.

VILLAGE CONNECTIONS

Extending beyond family, it is also an opportunity to get to know neighbors and explore the beauty tucked away within the many Village neighborhoods. In reflecting on their first paper delivery, TJ and Major replied, “The job is fun and brings smiles knowing that there is a good attention to detail needed to ensure all families receive the Village News!” Their father added, “Delivering the Village News is a new experience for our family that has allowed us to see more exciting parts of the Village together that are right around us. The neighborhoods are very welcoming, it is really good exercise and there are so many smiling faces as the Village News is delivered!”

It goes beyond the paycheck and spending time with family – it’s about being a part of the community, connecting with other residents, and feeling good about bringing smiles to others. Being a Village News carrier is a small job with a big heart. It strengthens the bond between families and the community, it helps children develop work ethic, confidence, and responsibility, and leads to memories the whole family will treasure.
