Summer's closing thoughts
by Susan Prince, MVF Board President
Summer is my favorite season. If you can overlook the heat wave that scorched our Fourth of July festivities, it's been a wonderful few months. We've finally received the much-needed rain our area has been waiting for, along with cooler temperatures that have made spending time outdoors even more enjoyable.
For me, summer means early morning pickleball matches, long, relaxing afternoons at our pools, and evening walks on those soft summer nights that seem to last forever. It's a season that reminds me just how fortunate we are to live in Montgomery Village.
This summer has been especially meaningful as we've continued celebrating Montgomery Village's 60th anniversary. Our Recreation and Parks Department has done an outstanding job creating a variety of activities that allow residents to collect stamps in the 60th Anniversary Passport while enjoying everything our community has to offer. From outdoor concerts and movies to camps, classes, and special events, there has been something for everyone. Behind the scenes, the Recreation and Parks Department has also worked tirelessly to maintain our parks, trails, and recreational spaces, giving us beautiful places to gather, exercise, and connect with neighbors.
What has been your favorite Montgomery Village summer activity?
As the days grow shorter, our thoughts naturally begin to turn toward fall. Students are looking forward to seeing friends again, parents are preparing for the back-to-school season, and our community is getting ready for another busy and exciting chapter. Along with the changing seasons, we're also seeing the completion of several projects that will benefit Montgomery Village for years to come.
Smooth Sailing on Montgomery Village Avenue
One of the most noticeable improvements this summer has been the completion of the Montgomery Village Avenue repaving project. The smooth new pavement is certainly a welcome change, but the project delivered much more than a resurfaced roadway. It also included several important traffic and pedestrian safety enhancements designed to make travel safer for everyone who lives in, works in, and visits Montgomery Village.
Residents will notice new traffic signals, updated traffic controls, and "No Turn on Red" restrictions at certain intersections. While these changes may require a brief adjustment for drivers who are familiar with the previous traffic patterns, they were designed to improve safety by reducing conflicts between vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The new traffic signals and updated traffic controls create safer opportunities for pedestrians to cross Montgomery Village Avenue while helping drivers navigate busy intersections more predictably. The new "No Turn on Red" restrictions are especially important because they reduce the risk of drivers turning into crosswalks while pedestrians are crossing with the signal. These measures are particularly beneficial for children walking to school, older adults, and anyone who uses our sidewalks and trails.
As with any roadway improvements, adapting to new traffic patterns takes a little time. We encourage everyone to slow down, pay attention to the new signs and signals, and remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists. A few extra seconds spent waiting at a light can help prevent a serious crash and make our streets safer for everyone.
These improvements reflect Montgomery County's ongoing commitment to creating safer, more accessible roadways. Thank you for your patience throughout construction and for doing your part to keep Montgomery Village a safe and welcoming community.
