Growing through service: my reflections as an MVF Board Student Representative
by Hillary Juarez
It has been one of the truest moments in my personal and academic life to serve as a Student Representative for Montgomery Village Foundation (MVF) Board of Directors in 2025.
What initially appeared to be a scary role quickly became an opportunity for growth and learning directly with the community. I learned more than just how decision-making is done, but also about the power of communication and responsibility in governance. Attending the monthly MVF Board meetings allowed me to see firsthand how resident concerns are addressed, how proposals are reviewed, and how collaboration between Board members and staff drives positive change in the community.
These monthly meetings became the foundation of my internship experience, providing context for the work I accomplished across multiple departments. Observing discussions, asking questions, and reviewing meeting agendas taught me the value of preparation, active listening and thoughtful contribution. Over time, I began to understand how each department plays a role in supporting MVF’s mission. This experience not only strengthened my understanding of leadership but also inspired me to bring my own ideas forward and contribute meaningfully to the community I represent.
In June, I began a summer internship working with multiple departments at the MVF Office, starting in the Communications Department under Ruth Stadius. There, I learned how Montgomery Village News is managed and how clear, consistent messaging keeps residents informed and connected. I also worked alongside Senior Graphic Designer Maria Pullifrone, where I observed how creativity, organization and design come together to create effective advertisements and outreach materials.
In Community Management, I worked under April Steward and Karen Kodjanian, where I assisted with tax violation documentation, answered live resident calls, and learned how Board meeting packets are prepared. These tasks showed me how organization and accuracy support informed decision-making.
I later worked with Duncan Mullis in the Department of Recreation and Parks, helping organize the 4th of July Parade, where I learned the importance of communication and coordination with outside organizations.
In the Finance and Administration Department, I supported daily cash operations, worked on legislative financial accounts, and observed payroll processes, learning the importance of accuracy and confidentiality.
I also spent time with Tracy Skalitzky in Human Resources, gaining insight into employee records, onboarding and workplace policies.
In addition, I worked with Dee Wirth in the Architectural Standards Department, where I learned how community design guidelines and property regulations are reviewed and enforced to maintain the aesthetic and safety standards of Montgomery Village.
Finally, I worked closely with Executive Vice President Mike Conroy, gaining a broader understanding of MVF as a whole. This experience enabled me to understand how each department contributes to the organization’s overall mission. During this time, I proposed the idea of creating an internal communication linguistic tool to better engage minority–majority community residents. I also received approval to help set up an office-wide cultural awareness training workshop. These opportunities allowed me to contribute meaningful ideas and conclude my internship with a stronger understanding of leadership, communication and community involvement.
Being an MVF Student Representative taught me lessons that go far beyond understanding how daily operations are managed. It showed me the value of collaboration, clear communication and dedication, and how these skills directly impact the Village community. I learned to listen actively, balance differing opinions, and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. Furthermore, this experience helped me gain confidence in sharing my ideas, advocating for others, and contributing meaningfully to group decisions.
Serving as a Student Representative has been an incredibly rewarding experience that has prepared me for future challenges, including college and beyond. I am grateful to everyone who guided and supported me throughout this opportunity, helping me grow into a more capable and thoughtful leader. I proudly encourage other students to consider applying for this role, as it offers a unique chance to learn, engage, and make a real difference in the community. Being a Student Representative is not just a position; instead, it’s a chance to grow, lead, and help shape the community in meaningful ways.
