Job Description: 

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Plans, implements, coordinates, supervises and evaluates a number of instructional classes and programs, including senior program, summer camps, performing fine arts and community events. Recruits, supervises and evaluates temporary staff, class and workshop instructors and independent contractors. Serves as onsite supervisor for periodic evening and weekend programming operations (rentals, programs and events).

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Plans, coordinates and supervises the Seniors in Action program which is a year-round, five-day-a-week program that offers the Montgomery Village 55+ community the opportunity to partake in social activities, games, exercise classes, book discussion group, trips, arts and crafts, and special events.
  • Plans, coordinates and supervises the Summers at South Valley Park performances series, KidJam series, and program/camp performers and entertainers. Manages permitting, research, recruitment, publicity, sponsorships coordination with partners, staff and volunteers.
  • Plans, supervises and evaluates annual special events including the Sweetheart Dance, flea markets, Bingo series, concerts, seasonal egg hunts, Touch-a-Truck and outdoor movies, and implements other special events as developed. Assists with planning and implementation of other special events as requested including Montgomery Village’s July 4th event.
  • Researches program trends; assesses community needs; and plans, implements, coordinates and evaluates a diverse portfolio of programs, instructional classes and workshops for all ages with the focus on arts, entertainment, wellness and education. Promotes diverse participation of persons from various cultural, educational and economic backgrounds.
  • Supervises summer camp location. Responsible for all facets of the camp program, including: hiring and managing on-site camp staff; communication with camp participants; ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements; procurement of resources; creation of training materials; and all other operational aspects.
  • Interviews, coordinates, supervises, evaluates temporary staff and recommends for hire. Responsible for ensuring that hiring procedures are followed. Approves timesheets.
  • Interviews, coordinates, supervises, evaluates class and independent workshop contractors. Responsible for ensuring that administrative procedures related to independent contractors including but not limited to contracts, COIs, hold harmless forms and paysheets are completed.
  • Coordinates activities and advertising with Montgomery Village schools and PTAs.
  • Completes monthly reports, program plans and evaluations. Responsible for ensuring that administrative procedures, including waivers, are completed, and complies with financial procedures.
  • Develops public relations materials such as press releases, posters, fliers, swinging signs, and center bulletin boards. Coordinates social media information with Communications staff; distributes materials as needed. Prepares information for quarterly recreation inserts.
  • Communicates MVF policies and procedures to staff and residents. Responds to resident inquires and concerns and reports incidents to supervisor.
  • Maintains all class and program equipment/supplies and ensures that they are kept clean and organized, and are safe for use. Inventories and orders approved supplies and equipment within budget guidelines. Solicits bids when required.
  • Completes regular inspections and safety assessments; maintains a hazard and drug-free environment; documents issues to identify risk areas; and recommends improvements. Reports maintenance problems with the facility or grounds to the Facilities Manager and supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Oversees the implementation of grants as directed; prepares reports, tracks costs and requests reimbursements as warranted.
  • Assists with preparation of department budget and submits financial reports.
  • Works some evenings, weekends and holidays. Periodically serves as onsite supervisor for recreational programing and facility rentals as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation programming.
  • Thorough knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
  • Working knowledge of budgetary process.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work with and communicate to diverse audiences and employees.
  • Ability to work independently using sound judgement in the execution of the position’s duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and members of the public, including children and their parents/guardians, in a positive, courteous, tactful, and professional manner.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activities such as frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities. Physical activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, crawling, carrying, pushing and grasping.
  • Ability to work in an office environment and indoor recreation facilities. Ability to work outdoors at various parks and properties in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to manage, motivate and supervise temporary staff, instructors and volunteers.
  • Ability to lead workshops and/or training classes.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Any combination of education or experience substantially equivalent to graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in recreation, education or a related field. Two years progressively responsible experience in recreation programming and supervision of staff.
    • Certification in American Red Cross (or acceptable equivalent) First Aid/CPR/AED or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.
    • Medical Administration Training for Camps or ability to complete by no later than one week before first day of summer camp.
    • Must pass a criminal background check and Child Protective Services background check
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
    • Strong computer skills.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • CPR and First Aid Instructor Certification.
    • Ability to speak Spanish.
    • Additional supervisory or recreation programming experience.
    • Prior experience in a similar work setting.
